Chadar Badar presents the daily life stories of the artists, different rituals and celebrations of the people through puppetry and different Pala songs. The songs are sung by the puppeteers. In this art form, traditional Santhal instruments like Banam, Tironiya, Flute and Madal play an important role. Banam is the rural version of violin. The name of this instrument has been mentioned in a traditional folktale called “Saat Bhai Champ.” The artists believe that the soul of young Champa is stuck in the Banam and the artists consider this instrument as their sister. Presently, in Bardhaman there are 7-8 groups, who use Harmonium, Madol, Dhol, and Parkasan in the performance. The movement of puppets with the songs and lyrics creates compassion among the audience. Chadar Badar is one of the unique presentations of Santhali culture. The puppeteers see their puppets as their children and every puppet has its name like male puppets are named as Ram, Laxman, Arjun, Kanu and female puppets are called Sonamuni, Khukumoni, etc, which is a wonderful experience.
